Rash of house fires in area

An Olive Hill man was killed in a fire last week that gutted his mobile home on Rose Ridge near the Lewis and Carter County line. Three other houses in Lewis County were destroyed in a stretch of eight days.

Firefighters from across the county were called to the home of Tim and Pam Corns on Trace Creek Road at about 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 24. The home was engulfed in flame by the time firefighters arrived.

Panzie Howard, a neighbor, said she was returning home from grocery shopping when she noticed the fire in the two-story home.

Firefighters were at the scene of a fire at a vacant home near Garrison Sunday morning. Firefighters had to set up equipment in the roadway, blocking Ky. Rt. 8, near the old roadside park until the scene was cleared.

Howard said she enlisted the help of other neighbors to salvage what belongings they could until the heat and smoke became too intense. The home was destroyed. No one was at home at the time of the fire, which remains under investigation.

On Tuesday, firefighters were paged out at about 5:30 p.m. to the home of Lillie Clark at the head of Fingerboard.

The mobile home, which belonged to Monroe Clark, was destroyed. Firefighters from Vanceburg, Black Oak and Garrison responded to the call. No one was at home at the time of the fire, which also remains under investigation.

Jackie Allen Buckler, 42, was pronounced dead after firefighters pulled him from his burning mobile home Wednesday, Kentucky State Police said. Foul play has been ruled out, state police said, adding that the fire appears to have been accidental.

Firefighters were again called out Sunday at about 10:30 a.m. to a vacant house on Ky. Rt. 8 near the old roadside park east of Garrison.

Firefighters from Garrison, Black and Vanceburg responded. With limited space, firefighters set up their staging area on the roadway, blocking traffic until after the scene was cleared.

Two Lewis County deputies honored

The names of two Lewis County Deputies were honored recently by the Department of Criminal Justice Training.

The two were among eight names added to the Kentucky Law Enforcement Memorial this year. The memorial honors officers who have been killed in the line of duty.

Deputy John Ruggles died January 7, 1878. He was shot and killed near Concord while he and a posse attempted to apprehend one of her two brothers who were wanted for stealing horses.

Deputy Creed "John" Johnson died October 31, 1952, after he was shot as he and the sheriff attempted to serve commitment papers to a man.

Two of the eight died in 2002: Samuel Catron and Howard "Buck" Callis. Catron was Pulaski County Sheriff and died April 13, 2002, after being shot once in the head as he walked toward his cruise while attending apolitical rally.

Callis, a Trimble County Deputy Jailer, died December 10, 2002, as he was on his way to pick up a prisoner when a tractor-trailer collided with the vehicle he was driving.

The four others included a marshal, a constable and two deputies who had died in the line of duty years earlier but whose names had never been included on the memorial.

Sheriff Bill Lewis submitted the names of the two Lewis County deputies after conducting research on the department.

The monument, which sits in front of the Department of Criminal Justice Training, is the only one in the state that recognizes all Kentucky peace officers who have been killed in the line of duty. This year's additions bring the total number of names to 321.

The monument was dedicated in 2000.

String of break-ins under investigation

Area officials are investigating a strong of auto break-ins late Saturday and early Sunday stretching along the AA Highway in Lewis County.

Sheriff Bill Lewis said his office is investigating five reported incidents and said two are under investigation by the Vanceburg Police Department and one by Kentucky State Police.

Lewis said it appeared the thieves were traveling along the AA Highway from west to east and chose mostly vehicles that were parked overnight in areas of little activity.

The thieves broke out vehicle windows to gain access and then would take items such as CB radios, cell phones, compact discs and CD players.

Five CB radios were taken from tractor-trailers parked at Reis Trucking west of Vanceburg. Other vehicles were parked at filling stations, which were closed overnight, or at park and ride locations.

Lewis said, I what may be a related case, a home near the Greenup County line had the glass to the door broke. He said an alarm likely scared off the intruders before they could gain entry.

Lewis said early Monday that he was not aware of similar incidents in other counties.

Anyone with information concerning the incidents should contact the Lewis County Sheriff's Office at 606-796-2912.
