City Council adopts budget
| By Al Owens Meeting in special
session last week, the Vanceburg City Council adopted the 13th annual fiscal
budget prepared by Mayor William T. Cooper.
During the regular session June 3, Cooper told the council that for the first time
since he has been mayor, the city's budget calls for only one project.
He cited a drop in revenue and an increase in expenses as the major causes for this
circumstance.
The mayor said that interest income has dropped from $42,000 to $18,000 in two years
because of the drop in interest rates. Insurance costs have increased 26 percent in that
same time frame. |
He pointed out that most communities in the
country face the same problem. The new budget shows $566,069 in the General Fund,
$600,000 in the Hydro Fund, $25,000 in the Street Fund, and $110,000 in the Sanitation
Fund. All the funds combined total $1,301,069.
Cooper said he had amended the budget since the first reading to include $10,000 for a
part time coordinator. The coordinator is required in order for the city to advance from
the bronze level to the silver level as a Renaissance City.
Moving from bronze to silver makes the city eligible for additional funding from the
state's Renaissance program for projects in the city. |

Grant awarded for skateboard park
| Lewis County skating enthusiasts will soon
have a park in Vanceburg where hey can hone their skills, thanks to Area Development Funds
awarded for the project. Governor Paul Patton announced the funding approval last week.
Commissioner Jody Lassiter of the Department for Local Government approved the grants
on the recommendation of the Buffalo Trace Area Development District.
The Area Development Fund finances community and industrial development projects in
each of Kentucky's 15 area development districts.
Project applications are generated from communities and recommended by each district's
board of directors. |
Funding approval is by the commissioner of
the Department for Local Government. The City of Vanceburg was awarded $8,856.97.
The project was first requested at a city council meeting by teens after police had
received complaints that skaters were damaging benches and landscaping around the
Vanceburg Depot Museum.
Mayor W.T. Cooper said he requested the funding with the support of Judge Executive
George Plummer and noted work is underway on the project and equipment for the skateboard
park is scheduled to be delivered shortly.
The park will be located at the Vanceburg Boat Dock Recreation Area. |
