Kentucky receives grants to assist
local fire departments
| Secretary Tom Ridge has announced 343 grants
to fire departments throughout the United States, including Vanceburg Volunteer Fire
Department, which has been awarded $55,850 for operations and firefighter safety. The
grants are part of the 15th round of the fiscal year 2004 Assistance to Firefighters Grant
Program. |
Over the next several months, approximately
8,000 awards worth nearly $750 million in direct assistance to firefighters will be given
throughout the country, demonstrating Homeland Security's commitment to ensuring that
America's firefighters have the resources they need to protect their communities. The
program is administered by the Department's Office for Domestic Preparedness, in
cooperation with the Department's Untied States Fire Administration. |

Knox County deputy jailer pleads
guilty
| AP--Knox County Deputy Jailer Clarence Wilson
pleaded guilty to charges stemming from accusations that he pulled over motorists and
demanded money last winter. Wilson, 38, pleaded guilty last week to impersonating a
peace officer, unlawful imprisonment, driving under the influences and official
misconduct. Under a plea agreement, he would serve two years on the charges. He is to be
sentenced September 24 in Montgomery County Circuit Court.
Police said that Wilson pulled over at least eight people in Fayette, Clark and
Montgomery counties while returning a prisoner to Lewis County, where the man was serving
a three-year sentence for credit card fraud. |
The prisoner, Shawn Phillip Reynolds, had
been convicted of burglaries in Knox County. When Wilson was arrested on I-64 in
Montgomery County, the Mount Sterling man he had stopped was sitting in the back seat of
Wilson's Solid Waste and Environmental Enforcement sedan, police said.
Reynolds wasn't handcuffed and had a bottle of wine with him in the front seat, police
said. Wilson had referred to Reynolds as "his deputy", motorists said.
Wilson still faces similar charges in Fayette and Clark counties in connection with the
trip. |
