Garrison School taken some time
between 1910 and 1913. This building preceded the brick building which was dismantled
several years ago. Robert "Bob" Brewer, who loaned this picture, says he does
not know the names of the students but his uncle, John Brady Lewis, was the teacher (with
bow tie) and that he taught only from 1909 to 1913, when he went to work for the railroad
(1914 to 1955). |

|
The Blankenship School sat in the
bottom near the foot of Stone Hill. The building in this picture was removed many, many
years ago. Mrs. Betty Ruggles informs us that the picture was taken around 1945 and that
the only people she can identify are Allen Walters, John Henry Blankenship, Karen Sue
Stone, and Alton Waters in the front row and in the second row is Irene Carver and Betty
Carver. Perhaps readers can identify others. The teacher, standing at the right, was
Elaine Stone. |

Redden are in it but their location cannot be identified. This picture will be put on
display at the Vanceburg Depot Museum soon. |

The first picture is that of the
first school fair parade which took place in 1913 (10 years after the County Fair was
organized). This picture was originally published in the Herald in the 1970s and gave the
date as 1914. A few days after the paper came out, Mr. John Q. Adams, former Lewis County
School Superintendent, wrote from his retirement home in Florida that the first school
parade was during his administration and that it happened in 1913, not 1914. |

|
The date, location, and identity of
the school and its students are not known. We believe that it was in the general area of
Petersville and probably in the early 1900s. |

|
On Saturday, June 26, 1965, the 1933
class of Lewis County High School held a reunion of their class, with several of their
spouses and eight of their teachers attending at the new high school, which opened its
doors on September 10, 1965, to its first students. Two of the major accomplishments of
the class of 1933 were the publishing of the first editions of the school newspaper, the
School Spun, and the school yearbook, Days of Daze. Charles Staggs, president of the class
and master of ceremonies, called on the principal, Prof. Glasgow to say a few words to the
class. Standing on the front row (not in order) are Robert Fabe and Marian Timmer Fabe, of
Cincinnati; Charles Staggs, Leroy Dorsey, of Flemingsburg; Mrs. James Collier (Frances
Baskett), of Cynthiana; Pat O'Neil, of Lawrenceburg, Indiana; Arthur Williams, of Stanton,
Ky.; Miss Carrie Goldenburg, Thomas W. Rowland, and Lena Wells Voiers, of Vanceburg. In
the second row are Anna Plummer Davis, Stella Webster Carver, Joe Carver, Winnie Staggs;
in the third row, Ned Lemaster, Hazel Lowder Lemaster, and Ralph Davis; on the 4th row,
Harlan "Rub" Voiers and Ann Staggs. |

|
These 1924 high school students are
standing beside the first high school then located in the old school building on the west
end of Second Street. In the back row is Bess Forman, Helen (Huffman) Rayburn, Velma
Keyser, and Audra Abbott; in the front row, Evelyn Hays, Edith (Lykins) Hamm, and Margaret
(Lykins) Willim. |

|
This school and its students have not
been identified. The teacher, standing at the far right, is Bruce Lykins (1891-1935). We
can speculate that the date of the picture is 1901, because that was Bruce Lykins' first
year of teaching, and a note on the picture says "Bruce's first school". |

|
These high school students (sometime
between 1923 and 1925) are standing beside the old lower school on West Second Street.
Those identified are: front row, Norene Henry, Alice Staley, unidentified, unidentified,
Evelyn Hayes, ----- Ruggles, and Audry Abbott; second row, Bertram Stricklett, Marian
Ackman, Helen Huffman, Leola Folmer, Margaret Willim, Edith Lykins, Velma Keyser, Bruce
Pollitt, and Mike McKee; in the third row are: Donald Grote, Mark (Luther) Stone,
unidentified, Elwood Dillow, Teddy Applegate, Marian Smith, Arthur Vance, and Forrest
Neal. |

The Poston School on the ridge
between Petersville and Wallingford near Browning's Orchard. When the school was closed in
the 1950s the pupils were sent to Wallingford. The writer's cousin, Marian M. Jolly,
taught there in the very early 1950s. The building, now owned by the Browning family, is
used for storage. (Photos by WIlliam Florence) |

The early Carrs School complete with
bell. We think this stood facing Route 8 near the Carrs-Fairmount Road. This picture was
taken in 1923. (Photo provided by Bettie Call Lewis.) |

|
The front of the new Carrs School in
1935. Several schools in the county were built in the same style but most of them have
been destroyed. Some of them were Valley (destroyed by a storm), Glen Springs (collapsed)
and perhaps Kinniconick. The persons in this photo are too distant to identify. (Photo
provided by Bettie Call Lewis.) |

Valley Schoolhouse succumbed to the
elements last week during a rainstorm passing through the area. The schoolhouse at
Charters was constructed in the 1930s as a WPA project and had been showing signs of
deterioration for several years. (July 24, 2001, William Florence) |

The old Tannery School, which stood on the
banks of Kinniconick until 1945. This photo is undated, but we believe it was taken some
time in the 1930s. The back is signed by Lillie Lewis Sargent who taught there. She stated
that Sylvester "Vess" Lewis went to the school. (Photo Submitted by Helen Liles

Dr. Talley came across this old photo
of the Vanceburg Grade School. There was no information on the back to give a clue as to
the event. Snow is on the ground so we can determine the time of year. Does anyone have
any ideas? Email us at heraldadvertising@yahoo.com |

This picture, taken about 1896 or 1897,
shows the students in a "normal school", conducted by W.R. (Roch) Henderson and
Prof. T.M. Grimes. This old building, still standing, was built in 1881 and did not
include the front addition of 1913 nor the later side additions of the 1940s. The photo is
from the W.C. Dugan collection. |

It is believed this picture was taken
at the Sullivan Hall at Eastern Kentucky University in Richmond in early 1900. Miss Anna
Bertram is the tall lady in the back row. Mrs. Elsie Himes Hinton is the third person to
the left of the third row. (Photo courtesy of Mrs. Alice Gardner) |
