Rev. Edsel Dummitt, 90, of Mansfield, Ohio, entered the arms of the Lord, Jesus Christ, on Wednesday, March 30, 2016. He was born February 21, 1926, in Lewis County to William Jesse and Ora (Cooper) Dummitt. He grew up on a tobacco farm, along with his siblings.
At age 16, he traveled to Bucyrus, Ohio, and began working for the railroad. From there, he went to Indiana to work on a local farm. He then joined the US Army serving for two years in Japan driving trucks to retrieve food. After his discharge, he went home to Kentucky and married Jewell Rose and once again worked on the family farm. They moved to Mansfield a short time later looking for work and, after a few small jobs, he began working at Tappan Company from which he retired.
Edsel was called to be a minister before moving to Mansfield and ministered to several small churches through the Church of Christ in Christian Union organization during his adult life. He was very dedicated to sharing the Gospel and passionate about celebrating the love of God. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, and felt his most important calling in life was to raise his children and grandchildren with love, kindness and understanding. In his free time, he relaxed by gardening, both vegetables and flowers, and canning. He enjoyed cooking and baking during his retirement and was known for his delectable blackberry pie.
He is survived by five children, Rita Primavera, Jane (Buddy) Burrows, Steven Dummitt, Beverly (Alberto) Tanzarella and Keith Dummitt; 10 grandchildren, Chris (Heather), Matthew (Erin), Andrew, Trey, Katie (Chris), Kelly, Danny (Samantha), Eric (Kathy), Rachel and Mitchell; 11 great-grandchildren, Gianna, Jackson, Luca, Aiden, Ryan, Cora, Tony, Vinny, Isaiah, Isaac and Elijah; three siblings, Hildreth Stone, Erma Hamilton and Dale (Colleen) Dummitt; and many nieces and nephews.
Edsel was preceded in death by his wife, Jewell Dummitt; a daughter, Kathy Garber; parents; brother, Gene Dummitt; an infant brother; and a sister, Mabel Bloomfield.
A Celebration Service will be held Friday, April 1, 2016, from 7:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the Ontario Home of Wappner Funeral Directors, 100 S. Lexington-Springmill Road in Mansfield, with visitation beginning at 6:00 p.m.
The service will be at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, April 5, 2016, at Laurel Point Christian Holiness Church in Lewis County with visitation beginning at Noon.
