School buses will be on the road soon

August brings back that time of the year where everyone from parents and students to all the school personnel are gearing up for a new school year.  We would like to provide you with a few safety tips that will help keep everyone safe on and around the school bus at this busy time of the year.

Before the bus arrives:

  • Make sure backpacks are ready to go.
  • Develop a morning routine that allows your child to be at the bus stop five (5) minutes early.
  • Students should stand no closer than ten (10) feet from the roadway.
  • All elementary students should be escorted to and from the bus stop by a guardian.
  • If your child must cross the street to board the school bus, they should follow instructions from the bus driver and be caution of their surroundings as they cross.
  • Students crossing the street must cross in front of the school bus.
  • If your child drops an item while boarding the bus, get the driver’s permission before retrieving it.

On the bus:

  • Children must remain seated at all times while the bus is moving.
  • All personal items must remain in the seat with the child.
  • Driving a bus takes skill and concentration, students should remain quiet and refrain from loud noises that distract your driver.  If the driver is looking in the rearview mirror, they are not looking where they are going.
  • Students should follow the instructions of the bus driver.

Leaving the Bus:

  • If your child must cross the street when leaving the school bus, they should follow instructions from the bus driver and be caution of their surroundings as they cross.
  • Students crossing the street must cross in front of the school bus.
  • Students should step ten (10) feet off of the roadways to a point where the bus driver can see them.
  • Elementary students should have a guardian meet the school bus to ensure children are safely returned home.
  • Talk to your child when they get home about their day and ask how the bus ride home went.

This year we have partnered with a new bus routing program (Transfinder) that allows us to map out our bus routes.  This will allow us to provide our sub bus drivers a better explanation of how to proceed through each route when they are covering for the regular driver.  We are still in training and learning more each day about the program.  We will soon be sending home information to parents to allow you to sign up for online updates about your child’s bus route.  This will allow us to communicate better when issues arise such as a sub bus being used that day or a possible delay in your child arriving at home that afternoon.  Below are tentative times that each driver will be starting their routes this year.  Please give the drivers ten (10) minutes or so the first few days to get their routines down.  Times will be adjusted as they get back into their routine.  We also have some new drivers this year.  Everyone please be safe and have a great start to your school year.
