Tommy Atherton

George Thomas Atherton, 86, a beloved figure of Maysville, passed away peacefully Monday, August 19, 2024, after a life richly lived in service of his family, friends, and church at Hospice of Hope Care Center in Maysville surrounded by those who loved him.

Tommy was born April 4, 1938, in Mason County, a son of the late William Howard and Helen Seddon Atherton, members of the Oakwood Church.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one daughter, Colleen Atherton.

Tommy left a legacy through his sons, Howard Christopher (Cindy) Atherton of Indialantic, Florida, Clay Thomas (Jennifer) Atherton of Columbia, Missouri; and a daughter, Carol Ann (Todd) Potts of Brooksville. Additional through six grandchildren, Ashlee Atherton, Conner Sweeney, Drew Q. Sweeney, Shelby Atherton, Clay Thomas Atherton Jr., and Isaiah Johnson; and one great-grandson, Logan Kabler.

Tommy has three loving sisters, June Lee of Mt. Carmel, Jane Kirkland of Mayslick, and Nancy Carpenter of Winchester, along with many numerous nieces and nephews.

Tommy had many close friends in the community; Mike Bradford, his neighbor who checked in on Tommy daily and never left without soliciting a NSFW response out of Tommy; Lisa Reeder who shared a special bond with Tommy and helped each other through the toughest of times; and none more special to him than the Heim’s Family: Doug and Debbie, Heather Bretz and her son Chase. They welcomed him into their family and treated him as one of their own. The love and care the Heim family extended to our Father will never be forgotten.

Tommy was strong-willed and stubborn at times, but he also had an enormous heart and wonderful sense of humor. He was generous, loyal, and kind. He was clever and full to the brim with knowledge gained through all his life experiences: farmer, mechanic, truck driver, woodworker, and craftsman – he could fix or build anything.

He will be remembered for all the heart he shared with his friends and family. He truly loved each of them – and if you knew him . . . you knew it! He was extremely proud of his children’s accomplishments and the families they built.

When his time came, he carried himself with dignity, strength, and full of love for those who went before him and those left behind. He will be missed dearly, by all of us. Rest in peace, Tommy.

A memorial service will be at 7:00 p.m. Friday, August 23, 2024, at Tollesboro Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 11918 KY 57 at Tollesboro, with Bro. Larry Manning officiating.

Friends may visit after 5:30 p.m. Friday, August 23, 2024, at Tollesboro Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to Hospice of Hope in Maysville, Grace Baptist Church of Lewisburg, and Mt. Carmel Cemetery.

Condolences may be sent at www.globefamilyfc.com.
