Dolores Anna Carter Calder Brown was born January 27, 1950, in Columbus, Ohio, to the late Chester and Beatrice Zornes Carter. She passed away September 6, 2026, at Southern Ohio Medical Center Hospice in Portsmouth, Ohio, surrounded by love.
Dolores was one of a kind. She had a strong will, but also a heart with an endless supply of love. If someone needed help, Dolores helped. If someone was hungry, she fed them. If someone needed a home, she opened her door. She believed that family was more than just blood.
Dolores taught her children that family isn’t just the people you’re born to, but the people God places in your life. She lived this out for more than 20 years by opening her home as a foster parent to more than 100 children. She loved the simple things in life. She enjoyed canning and made a pineapple upside-down cake that was legendary in the family. Her love often showed up in the way she made sure you had food or offered to help.
Her greatest legacy isn’t found in the number of children she helped raise or the accomplishments of her life. Her greatest legacy is found in the people who can say, “She made room for me.” Dolores made room for people. She made room in her home. She made room at her table. She made room in her family. Most importantly, she made room in her heart.
She is survived by five children, Wilbur (Frankie) Calder, Jannifer Calder, Janetbea (Shannon) Lykins, Joanna (Nathan) Yates, and Cyrus Silvers (Keauna); 10 grandchildren, Kennedy Calder, Heaven (Paul) Regner, Logan (Savannah) Calder, Makayla Bray, Rikisha Yates, Josiah Yates, Zathan Yates, Kasen Calder, Kalilah Silvers, and Eris Silvers; two great-grandsons, Joseph Calder and Alexander Holsinger; a brother, Sammy (Joyce) Carter; a sister-in-law, Rita Carter; many nieces and nephews; and several close friends.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Carroll Calder; her second husband, Joseph Brown; and her siblings, Garland Carter, Chester Carter, and Flora Flinders.
Services will be at 1:00 p.m. Friday, September 11, 2026, at Globe Family Funeral Chapel, 103 Dudley Avenue at Garrison, with Bro. Junior Bowles officiating. Burial will follow in Crystal Dawn Cemetery.
Friends may visit after 11:00 a.m. Friday at Globe Family Funeral Chapel at Garrison.
Pallbearers will be Nathan Yates, Josiah Yates, Zathan Yates, Logan Calder, Shannon Lykins, and Cyrus Silvers.
Honorary pallbearers will be Kasen Calder, Joseph Calder, and Alexander Holsinger.
