Agnes Hicks

Beulah “Agnes” Applegate Hicks, 94, of Portsmouth, Ohio, formerly of South Portsmouth, passed away peacefully Tuesday, December 5, 2023, at Hillview Retirement Center in Portsmouth.  

Agnes was born at Ribolt on March 4, 1929, a daughter of the late Harry and Queenie Spence Applegate. 

For many years, she was a member of First United Methodist Church in Portsmouth, Ohio, then later in life, up until her passing, she was a member of St. Paul Church of Christ.  Agnes wore many hats over the years, as she worked alongside her husband Delmer in running and maintaining the family businesses, which they both continued to do until late in life.

Left behind to cherish her memory are three daughters, Pam Cox of South Shore, Stephanie Barnett of Ironton, Ohio, and Michelle (Jeff) Gleim of Murphysboro, Illinois; one son, Delmer Eric (Teresa) Hicks of Portsmouth, Ohio; one brother, Wilburn Applegate of Maysville; and one sister, Patricia (Jack) Hobbs of Jacksonville, Florida.  

She was a beloved Mamaw to 11 grandchildren, Amy (Randy) Sizemore, Jessica (Adam Rase) Haas, Andrea (JB) Cronin, Katy (Jay) Colegrove, Wesley (Savannah) Barnett, Sarah Barnett, Trenton (Reneé) Barnett, Delmer Evan Hicks, Emily (Ethan) Leonard, Todd (Maria) Gleim, and Tyler Gleim; and 16 great-grandchildren, Gage and Aubrey Sizemore,  Braxton Rase, Cayden, Carson, and Ava Cronin, Haleigh Colegrove, Everhett and August Barnett, Aiden, Jaxon, and Easton Barnett, Dawson Basham and Beckham Barnett, and Griffin and Allison Gleim. She also leaves behind several other family members and friends who will greatly miss her. 

She was a devoted and loving wife to Delmer E. Hicks, to whom she was married for 68 years at the time of his passing in 2018. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a sister, Flo Hull; a brother, Boyd Applegate, and a son-in-law, Bob Barnett.

The family would like to extend their deepest thanks to the staff at Hillview Retirement Center for aiding in her care for the past few years.

Services will be at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, December 9, 2023, at Roberson Funeral Home in South Shore with Kevin Yeager officiating. Burial will follow in Collier Memorial Gardens at South Portsmouth. 

Visitation for family and friends will be after 11:00 a.m. Saturday at Roberson Funeral Home.
