Charles Bernard “Bernie” Howell, 93, of Cimarron Road, Morehead, formerly of Garrison, passed away Tuesday, November 29, 2022, at his home.
Born December 3, 1928, at Carrs, he was a son of Wesley and Mary Maud Cropper Howell, the eighth of 11 children and grew up along the Ohio River on a dairy and tobacco farm. On December 23, 1950, he married the love of his life, Jo Anne Lewis, who passed away in 2017.
Mr. Howell is survived by two daughters, Ann Clark of Morehead and Sue Gallenstein of Burlington; one daughter-in-law, Diane Howell Franklin of Burgaw, North Carolina; four grandchildren, Mindy Highley and husband Jeff of Owingsville, Stephanie Swain and husband Art of Atkinson, North Carolina, Bill Howell and wife Dana of Burgaw, North Carolina, and Joe Gallenstein and wife Alexandria of Covington; and eight great-grandchildren, Megan Christie and husband Frankie, Zack Highley and wife Holly, Emily Highley, Ryan Howell, Blake Howell, Dylan Gallenstein, Eleanor Gallenstein, and Lauryn Howell; and one brother, Gene Howell of Bucyrus, Ohio.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by one son, Charles Howell; one grandson, Jonathan Gallenstein; and one son-in-law, Dwight Clark. He was also preceded in death by nine siblings: Oleta Polley, Roy Howell, Doris Mackey, Warner Howell, Beatrice Vergne, Alice Howell, Harry Howell, Betty Barrett, and Fern Henderson.
Bernard was a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend who enjoyed his life as a railroader, farmer, and Christian. He was a retiree of the C&O/CSX Railroad, starting as a laborer as a teenager and advancing to other roles including heavy equipment operator and foreman.
Bernard was very active in the Garrison United Methodist Church for 50 years. After moving to Morehead 20 years ago, he attended Johnson First Church of God. He furthered his ministry outreach through involvement in the Lay Witness Mission organization and participation in Gideons International.
He will be greatly missed and lovingly remembered by his family and dear friends.
Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, December 4, 2022, at Vanceburg United Methodist Church with Bro. Charles Hampton officiating. Burial will follow in Lewis County Memory Gardens.
Pallbearers will be Bill Howell, Joe Gallenstein, Jeff Highley, Zack Highley, Ryan Howell, Blake Howell, and Frankie Christie.
Visitation will be from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Saturday, December 3, 2022, at Northcutt and Son Home for Funerals, 400 Fraley Drive at Morehead, and after 1:30 p.m. Sunday, December 4, 2022, at Vanceburg United Methodist Church, 111 Second Street in Vanceburg.
