Brooks Riley

Thomas Brooks Riley Jr. departed this life Sunday, December 22, 2024, at Hospice of Hope Care Center in Maysville. 

Brooks was born in Lewis County on September 1, 1940, a son of the late Margaret Shumate and Thomas Riley Sr.

He was a graduate of Lewis County High School and attended Morehead State University. As a young adult, he was a steel worker and later worked on the family farm. 

Brooks was a member of Stone City Masonic Lodge #963 Free & Accepted Masons of Garrison where he was a Third Degree Master Mason.

Well known for his loud and boisterous personality, he loved storytelling and recounting his adventures. He also enjoyed hunting, following politics, and eating down-home cooked food.

Survivors include a daughter, Teresa Sapp of Ewing; a son and daughter-in-law, Thomas “Bo” and Mechelle Riley of Chillicothe, Ohio; a daughter, Patricia Riley of Ashland; a grandson and wife, Sean and Kara Sapp of Lexington; two sisters, Betty Tharp of Phoenix, Arizona, and Janet Itanen of Stark, Florida; a niece, Shelly Anderson of Phoenix, Arizona; as well as great- and great-great- nieces and nephews in Florida and Minnesota.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Tammy Riley; a brother, Rex Allen Riley; and a niece, Lucia Darcy. 

In accordance with Brooks’ wishes, there will be a private service at the convenience of the family.

Gaydos Funeral Home in Vanceburg is caring for the family of Thomas Brooks Riley Jr. 

Memorials are suggested to Hospice of Hope in Maysville.
