Devetta Bowles

Devetta Louise Bowles

Oct 1, 1951 – Jan 20, 2025

Devetta Louise Bowles, 73, walked through the gates of Heaven on January 20, 2025, at her residence after a few years of illness. Devetta was born October 1, 1951, to the Union of her late parents, Rev. Roosevelt Bowles Sr. and Dorothy Louise Greene Bowles in Vanceburg, Kentucky.

She was the eldest of her siblings and she always enjoyed saying, “I am the oldest”. She was educated in the Lewis County Public School System and upon finishing the eighth grade, she helped out at the family home and often shared in caring for her younger siblings.

She was a woman of great faith and loved God and His Word. At a young age she was saved by the power of God and baptized into the membership of the Cedar Grove Pentecostal Church where her father was the Pastor. She sang in church and would often offer testimonies of her ever-abiding love and affection to God. Occasionally, she would sing with her sisters and other family members at her home church and churches in her hometown area. Two of her favorite songs were, “God Reached Way Below the Bottom” and “Because He Lives”. Devetta loved God, her family, and her friends and she always made herself welcome in God’s House wherever she worshipped.

After moving to Lexington, she began attending the Powerhouse Church of God and later started attending Winburn Drive Baptist Church although she never united with them. She also attended a Bible Study group at Connie Griffin Manor where she used to live.

She was preceded in death by her parents Rev. Roosevelt and Dorothy Louise Greene Bowles Sr., maternal grandparents Holbert and Elizabeth Gragston Greene; paternal grandparents; Robert and Hattie Turner Bowles; two brothers–Robert Allen Bowles and Billy Ray Bowles; two sisters–Gwendelyn Marie Bowles and Patricia Bowles Raglin.

She leaves to trust God one Brother – Rev. Roosevelt Bowles Jr.; four sisters: Mrs. Marla K. (Deacon Cornelius B.) Patton, Evangelist Anita M. (Evg. Anthony) McAdams, Mrs. Mary A. Burnside, and Mrs. Lorna F. (Deacon Eric D.) Smith Sr., one “double” cousin/special sister– Ms. Connie S. Bowles; one aunt–Mrs. Frances Mayberry Greene; and several generations of nieces, nephews, and cousins. Devetta was blessed with a very special friend here in Lexington named Diane Johnson who always stopped in to check on her almost every week. Other childhood friends she stayed in touch with were: Melissa Gilliam, Barbara Stone, and Ora May Rister.
