Doris Ellen (Dillow) Powers, beloved Mother, Wife and Granny passed away peacefully at Vanceburg Nursing and Rehab on Wednesday, July 24th surrounded by her Husband and Daughters.
Doris was born on October 14, 1947 in Vanceburg to the late Maurice and Thelma Dillow and was raised on Town Branch with her Sister Linda (Tom) Dyer.
On July 14, 1973 she married her husband of 51 years Byron Powers. The couple resided in Black Oak where they raised their two daughters Tara (Bill) Deegan and Mary Ann (Patrick Collins).
Doris spent 27 years teaching the youth of Lewis County Home Economics first at Tollesboro High School and finishing her career at Lewis County High School. She was passionate about her job and believed that Home Economics was an important curriculum and was deeply saddened when it was removed. If you are reading this and live in Lewis County there is a good chance you have had a meal prepared by someone taught by Mrs. Powers.
Doris enjoyed exploring and going on long drives with her Husband, who would always purposefully take the longest route home. She and Byron made and sold many crafts over the years and her creativity was something to be envied. As soon as her daughters were old enough she loved sharing and teaching them how to cook, create and make recipes that were passed down through generations. She was always direct but gentle with her critiques to ensure the recipes were perfected. Doris also enjoyed gardening and all of the work that went along with it including canning, freezing and preserving the fruits of her labor. In her later years she enjoyed watching birds and squirrels at her many feeders and visiting and talking on the phone to her many friends.
Her biggest joy came from spending time and spoiling her Grandbabies Haley, Ava, Luke and Zane Deegan and Katelyn, Hunter and Beau Collins. At a moments notice Doris and Byron would drive anywhere and could be counted on to do anything to spend time with and support their grandchildren.
Doris was fiercely independent to the point of being stubborn, but she loved just as fiercely. She will be missed every minute of every day but leaves behind a legacy of love, caring and compassion that will continue on for generations.
A private family service is scheduled for a later date and services are being handled by Globe Family Funeral Chapel and Cremation services.
Globe Family Funeral Chapel is honored to serve the family of Mrs. Doris Allen (Dillow) Powers.
