Herbert Thurman

Herbert Elmo Thurman, 96, of Tollesboro, passed away Friday afternoon, December 25, 2020, at Pioneer Trace Healthcare and Rehabilitation in Flemingsburg.

He was born July 4, 1924, in Lewis County, a son of the late John Hargis Oliver and Emma Kinney Thurman.

Herbert proudly served his country in the United States Army during WWII and was a lifelong farmer. He enjoyed working on the farm, hunting, trapping, gardening, and spending time with his family.

Herbert is survived by two sons, Steven Larry Thurman (Sharon) and Charles Herbert Thurman (Vicky), of Tollesboro; five daughters, Pamela Sue Monteith, Judy Kay Gray (Allen), and Cathy Jean Applegate (Tommy) of Tollesboro, Patsy Thurman Ginn (Glenn) and Debbie Edington (Danny) of Vanceburg; two sisters, Edith Toller of Owingsville, and Lora Carrington of Tollesboro; 17 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and three great-great grandchildren. He also leaves many other family members and friends who will sadly miss him.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Edith Butler Thurman; two sons-in-law, Namen Monteith and Ricky Monteith; three grandchildren, Danny Wayne Edington, Angela Thurman and Susan Thurman; three brothers, Otis Thurman, Minnie Thurman and Roy Thurman; and one sister, Olive Thurman.

A graveside service will be at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, December 30, 2020, in Bethel Cemetery at Tollesboro with Bro. Tony Corns officiating.

Tollesboro Funeral Home and Cremation Services is caring for all arrangements.

Family and Friends will serve as pallbearers.
