Gary Neil “Jay” Irey, 66, of Vanceburg, passed away Monday afternoon, January 7, 2019, at his home.

He was born December 29, 1952, in Lewis County, a son of the late Charles and Minnie Belle McCann Irey.

Jay worked until his retirement at Tollesboro Elementary School and enjoyed listening to bluegrass music, watching old westerns, being a member of the Quicks Run Softball Team, and spending time with his family and friends. He was an avid sports fan who loved UK Basketball, Cincinnati Reds, Cincinnati Bengals and attending Lewis County sporting events.

Jay is survived by three brothers, Charles Irey and Roger and Patricia Irey, all of Vanceburg, Robert and Susan Irey of Aberdeen, Ohio; four sisters, Judy Irey and Janice and Roy Polley, all of Vanceburg, Joyce McCleese of Mentone, Indiana, and Shirley and Marvin McCleese of Leesburg, Indiana; and several nieces and nephews. He also leaves many other family members and friends who will sadly miss him.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Randy Eugene Irey.

Services will be at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, January 12, 2019, at Dickerson Funeral Home in Vanceburg with Bro. Tom Cox Jr. officiating. Burial will follow in Muses Chapel Cemetery.

Friends may visit from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Friday, January 11, 2019, and after 9:00 a.m. Saturday at Dickerson Funeral Home, 110 West Second Street in Vanceburg.

Pallbearers will be Russell Irey, Myron Irey, Randy Irey, Nick Irey, Brandon Walker, Greg McCleese, Kevin McCleese, and Mark McCleese. Honorary pallbearers will be David Nathaniel Irey, Ritchie Cunningham, Michael Applegate, Ryan Irey, Michael Irey, and Justin Cunningham.
