Jewell Ruth Riley Hicks, 83, of Ashland, Ohio, formerly of Vanceburg, passed away peacefully Saturday, January 21, 2017, at Kingston Nursing Facility in Ashland, Ohio.
She was born May 7, 1933, a daughter of the late Cleve and Nanny Sue Riley.
She was a member of the First Assembly of God in Mansfield, Ohio. While at Kingston of Ashland, she won the privilege of being the representative for the Ashland County Senior Fair Queen. She loved gardening, cooking, baking and won many ribbons at the Ashland County Fair. One year that she entered she won the largest pumpkin award. Anyone that crossed her doorstep was immediately fed, whether they were there because they were homeless or had stopped for a Sunday afternoon visit. Her giving nature was passed on to her children as well as her grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, Jewell was preceded in death by her husband, Eshmell Hicks, whom she married on June 25, 1953, and who passed away on April 25, 1998; three brothers, Jack Riley, Odist Riley, and Kenneth Riley; and one sister, Wilma Hockley.
She was the loving and devoted mother of five sons, twins, Ronald (Denise) Hicks and Ricky (Barbara) Hicks, Randy Hicks, Rodney Hicks, and Rex (Diane) Hicks; one daughter, Rita (Paul) Little; 11 loving grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; one sister, Freda (Jackie) Lewis; and several beloved nieces and nephews. She leaves many other family members and friends who will sadly miss her.
Services will be at 1:00 p.m. Friday, January 27, 2017, at Globe Family Funeral Chapel at Camp Dix. Burial will follow in Morgan Cemetery at Head of Grassy.
Friends may visit from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. Friday, January 27, 2017, at Globe Family Funeral Chapel, 7975 Lower Kinney Road at Camp Dix.
Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.
