James Edward Shelton, 71, of Vanceburg, passed away unexpectedly Sunday, May 18, 2025, at his home.
Jim was born in Portsmouth, Ohio, on July 16, 1953, a son of the late Charles Fred and Violet L. Smith Shelton.
In his earlier years, Jim worked with Dean Switzer driving the bulk mail truck. He also worked for Lewis County Ambulance and Edge Mead Ambulance in Ohio. He was an active member of the Miss Kentucky State Scholarship Pageant and the Miss Ohio State College Pageant committees. He assisted in producing the Miss Lewis County Pageant at the Lewis County School and Agricultural Fair for many years.
Jim served as chairperson of the Renaissance Committee for the City of Vanceburg, working to improve the downtown area and secure funding for the restoration of the George Morgan Thomas Home. He developed Shelton Mobile Home Park and was a collector of comic books and baseball cards. He was raised in and attended Vanceburg Christian Church. Jim loved his dogs, Nidget and Chase.
Left to cherish Jim’s memories are two sisters, Sharon Kennedy of Maysville and Katherine “Kate” (Denny) Gallagher of Lima, Ohio; two nieces, Angela Schumach and Ashley (Adam) Fite; two nephews, Denny (Kym) Gallagher and Scott (Jessica) Gallagher; and great-nieces and great-nephews, Jaedyn, London, Blake, Gavin, Alexa, and Jacob. A host of other family members and friends also survive who will mourn his passing.
Services will be at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, May 24, 2025, at Gaydos Funeral Home, 159 Second Street in Vanceburg, with Bro. John Byard officiating. Burial will follow in Black Oak Cemetery.
Visitation will be after 11:00 a.m. Saturday, May 24, 2025, at Gaydos Funeral Home.
Pallbearers will be nieces and nephews, Ashley, London, Scott, Ryan, and Mike.
