John Allen Adkins, 59, of Vanceburg, passed away Tuesday afternoon, January 24, 2017, at Vanceburg Rehab in Vanceburg.
He was born March 30, 1957, in Lewis County, a son of the late Edward Adkins and Wilma Jane Lawson McCane.
John was of the Pentecostal faith and retired from US Shoe after 20 years of service. He enjoyed fishing, listening to classic rock music, watching UK basketball and the Cincinnati Bengals on TV. John was a die-hard Jeopardy! fan, was fluent in American Sign Language, and loved obtaining knowledge from reading the dictionary and encyclopedia.
John is survived by one son, Brandon Arledge (Maria) of Chillicothe, Ohio; three grandchildren, Alethea Arledge, Jude Arledge, and Maxwell Arledge, all of Chillicothe, Ohio; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Terry and Rhonda Johnson of St. Paul, and Roger Duane and Melissa McCane of Vanceburg; three stepbrothers, Cecil McCane (Thelma), John McCane, and Dallas McCane (Marlene), all of Vanceburg; six sisters, Janet Kay Adkins Fraley (Winfred) and Rita Adkins Fraley (David), all of Garrison, Joyce Adkins Bentley (Danny), Vonda Johnson Clark (Bud), and Kathy Flo Adkins, all of Vanceburg, and Regina Cullum (Jerry) of West Portsmouth, Ohio; and three stepsisters, Rosemary McCane Byrum and Faye McCane Jackson (John), of Columbus, Ohio, and Brenda McCane Mefford (Joe) of Vanceburg. He also leaves many other family members and friends who will sadly miss him.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by six brothers, Donald Adkins, Edward Adkins, Randall Wayne Adkins, Ronald Ray Adkins, Eric Thomas McCane, and Larry McCane; and two stepfathers, Forest “Jim” Johnson and Naman McCane.
Services will be at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, January 28, 2017, at Dickerson Funeral Home in Vanceburg with Bro. Chris Lawhun officiating. Burial will follow in Bethel Cemetery in Lewis County.
Friends may visit from 11:30 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. Saturday, January 28, 2017, at Dickerson Funeral Home, 110 West Second Street in Vanceburg.
Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.
