Deputy Matt Ross is investigating a fatal two vehicle accident Thursday evening on Ky. Rt. 8 at Dugan’s Curve, east of Vanceburg.
Ross said the accident happened about 6:20 p.m. when an eastbound Kia Spectra, operated by Peggy Workman, 23, of Vanceburg, traveled left of the center line in the curve and collided with a westbound GMC Sonoma pick-up operated by William Ernest Wolfe, 58, of Vanceburg.
He said both vehicles came to rest against the guardrail in the westbound lane.
Ross said Workman was pronounced dead at the scene by Deputy Coroner Amanda Clark at 7:31 p.m.
Wolfe, who received multiple injuries, was initially taken to Southern Ohio Medical Center by Portsmouth Ambulance. Ross said Wolfe was later transferred by ambulance to Cabell-Huntington Hospital in Huntington, West Virginia. He added that Wolfe’s injuries are not life-threatening.
Ross said a minor secondary accident happened when a vehicle that was stopped in the roadway for the accident was struck in the rear by another auto. There were no injuries in that incident.
Ross said it had been raining and the roadway was wet at the time of the accident.
Ky. Rt. 8 was closed from Vanceburg to Echo Hills until the scene could be cleared.
Ross, who is continuing the investigation into the accident, was assisted at the scene by Deputy Gary Sparks, Deputy Mark Sparks, Portsmouth Ambulance, Black Oak Fire and Rescue, Vanceburg Police Officer Mike Ginn, Vanceburg Fire and Rescue, Garrison Fire and Rescue, Constable Larry Colley, Constable Mark Riley, and West Kentucky 8 Towing.
