One of the goals this election for Lewis County Judge Executive George Sparks is to raise voter turnout for Lewis County.
“Every single vote counts,” Sparks says. “Just here in Lewis County we’ve had tied elections decided by a coin flip. We’ve had elections won or lost by a single vote.”
The polls will be open across Kentucky next Tuesday, November 5. While there are some local races, most of us are heading out to cast a vote for a presidential candidate, or for or against a proposed constitutional amendment.
There are some unopposed candidates on the ballot while 11 individuals are vying for the six seats on Vanceburg City Council. Lewis County voters can choose whether or not we are in favor of the sale of medicinal cannabis.
Residents of the City of Concord may write in up to four names for city commissioners.
Candidates for Soil and Water Conservation District Supervisors are also on the local ballot.
In-person early voting will be at the Lewis County Courthouse Thursday through Saturday. Polls will be open at the county’s four vote centers from 6:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 5. The centers are located at Garrison Elementary, Laurel Elementary, Tollesboro Elementary, and Lewis County Middle School.
Early voting is also an option with this election Thursday through Saturday.
In-person voting requires a driver’s license or photo ID.
“Too many people sit on the sidelines on election day. You can help change that,” Sparks says.
“When it comes to the issues that affect each of us, right here in Lewis County, every vote counts,” he adds.
Lewis County Sheriff Johnny Bivens is also urging every eligible voter to make the effort to vote in this election.
“Elections aren’t just about the candidates. They’re about each one of us as individuals,” Bivens says.
“If we want to have a say in what happens to us, we need to begin at the polls,” he adds.
“In each election we have a chance to choose leaders who will do things that are important to us,” Sparks said. “If we don’t vote then we allow someone else to do the choosing for us.”
