Roy Thayer

Roy Douglas Thayer, 80, of Quincy, passed away Tuesday, March 12, 2024, at his home after a long illness. He was surrounded by his family. 

He was born on November 4, 1943, a son of the late Raymond Chester and Nellie Brown Thayer.

Roy was a Kentucky Colonel, a member of South Shore Fullerton and Covington Masonic Lodge for over 50 years, and a member of South Shore Church of the Nazarene. He was known internationally as a premiere Birmingham Roller Pigeons, which was his passion. Roy’s life work was as a superintendent and his masonry is best on display at Shawnee State University Library.

Left behind to cherish his memory are his wife Sandy Gwinn Harmon Thayer; one daughter, Julie Thayer Ruark; one son, Shawn (Marie) Harmon; one sister, Dolly (Bill) McBrayer; two brothers, Bill (Patty) Thayer and Mike (Katrina) Thayer; nine grandchildren, Thayer (Aleesha) Himes, Caleb (McKenzie) Ruark, Elijah (Brooke) Ruark, Josiah (Haley) Harmon, Jillian, Sarah, Wyatt Harmon, Savannah and Wyatt Harmon; his great-grandchildren, “his babies,” Marley Ruark, Cooper Blank, and Valeigh Himes. Several other family members and friends also survive who will sadly miss him.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Janet Lancaster; two sons, Jonathon “Andy” Andrew Thayer, and Matt Harmon; and two brothers, Jim and Buddy Thayer.

Services will be at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, March 16, 2024, at Roberson Funeral Home at South Shore with David Robirds officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Cemetery at Quincy. 

Visitation will be from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Friday, March 15, 2024, and after 10:00 a.m. Saturday at Roberson Funeral Home. 

Masonic services will be at 8:00 p.m. Friday at Roberson Funeral Home.
