Lewis County businessman Sanford “Sam” Howard continues to show improvement after having been diagnosed early this year with a rare disorder in which the body’s immune system attacks part of the peripheral nervous system.
He was diagnosed with Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) on Tuesday, April 19. It has been more than seven months since the Howard family heard that medical term and began to learn the illness.
“I’ve made a lot of progress since then,” Howard said from his room at Kingsbrook Lifecare Center in Ashland. “I still have a long way to go.”
A few weeks ago Howard was unable to express himself verbally because of paralysis, a result of the GBS.
