Virgil Cole

Virgil Agnew Cole, 84, of Vanceburg, former Lewis County Sheriff and lifelong farmer, passed away Friday, July 19, 2024, at Southern Ohio Medical Center in Portsmouth, Ohio, surrounded by his loving family.

He was born in Lewis County on June 28, 1940, a son of the late Olin and Oletha Osborne Cole.

In his younger days, he enjoyed playing baseball and softball. He loved farming and watching the Cincinnati Reds, but most of all he enjoyed watching his granddaughter play softball and his grandson play baseball.

Virgil is survived by one daughter, Melanie (Victor) Christy; one son, Marty Bruce (Natasha) Cole; four grandchildren, Emily Cole, Ayden Cole, Adam (Kaycee) Christy, and Cory (Lindsey) Christy; and a great-granddaughter, Chloe Christy. Many other family members and friends also survive who will sadly miss him.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife of 59 years, Darlene Bruce Cole; one sister, Imogene Napier; and one brother, Harlan Cole. 

Services will be at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, July 23, 2024, at Dickerson Funeral Home, 110 West Second Street in Vanceburg, with Bro. Jerry Blevins officiating. Burial will follow in Maddy Cemetery.

Friends may visit after Noon Tuesday, July 23, 2024, at Dickerson Funeral Home.

Pallbearers will be Marty Cole, Ayden Cole, Adam Christy, Cory Christy, Matthew Cook, and Johnny Cook.
