Virgil Lemuel “Bud” Thurman, 88, of West Union, Ohio, formerly of Lewis County, passed away Wednesday morning, September 13, 2017, at his home.

He was born July 23, 1929, in Lewis County, a son of the late George Turner and Hattie Brewer Thurman.

Bud was a retired logger and mechanic, and was a lifelong musician. He attended and played music in many churches in the area and was a member of Fishers of Men Ministries of West Union, Ohio.

Bud is survived by his wife of 37 years, Lillie Mae Rickett Thurman; seven sons, Virgil Thurman (Mary), Gary Thurman (Rita), Dennis Thurman (Ruth), George Thurman, and Richard Thurman (Tina), all of Vanceburg, Larry Thurman (Nellie) of Garrison, Kentucky, Keith Thurman (Bobbie) of Ohio; six daughters, Connie Tackett (Carlos) and Teresa Hope Pruitt (Tim), all of Garrison, Patty Stone (Dwayne), Angie Johnson and Vicki Stone (Greg), all of Vanceburg, Jacqueline Mahaney (George) of Michigan; seven stepchildren, Harold Rickett and Charles Durham (Laurie), all of Ohio, Elsie Middleton (Mike) of Vanceburg, Faye Power (Clayton) of Olive Hill, Patricia Hickerson of Flemingsburg, Dovey Hamilton (Doug) of West Union, Ohio, and Rhonda Godbey (Eddie) of McDermott, Ohio; 54 grandchildren; 95 great-grandchildren; and 12 great-great-grandchildren. He also leaves many other nieces, nephews, cousins, and life-long friends who will sadly miss him.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one daughter, Hattie Jane Thurman Lee; four grandchildren; six brothers; four sisters; two sons-in-law; and his first wife, Carmel Ruth Evans Thurman. Bud is the last of his generation.

Services will be at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, September 19, 2017, at Globe Family Funeral Chapel in Garrison with Bro. Richard Thurman officiating. Burial will follow in Skidmore Cemetery at Garrison.

Friends may visit from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Monday, September 18, 2017, and after 9:00 a.m. Tuesday at Globe Family Funeral Chapel, 103 Dudley Avenue at Garrison.

Virgil’s sons will serve as pallbearers.
