Burn Ban Lifted

A burn ban that had been in effect for all of Lewis County since August 24 has been lifted.

Judge Executive George Sparks issued the burn ban for Lewis County due to dry conditions that led to increased chances for fire activity.

Sparks said dry conditions and little immediate chance of significant rainfall led to the ban.

The ban was lifted Friday, September 26, following rainfall in the area.

Kentucky’s Fall Fire Hazard Season gets underway Wednesday (October 1) with some burning restrictions.

Per KRS 149.400: During the fire hazard seasons it shall be unlawful for any person to set fire to, or to procure another to set fire to, any flammable material capable of spreading fire, located in or within 150 feet of any woodland or brushland, except between the hours of 6:00 p.m. through 6:00 a.m., or when the ground is covered with snow.

This statute is intended to prevent forest fires by allowing outdoor burning only after 6:00 p.m. when conditions are less likely to cause a wildfire to spread.

For more information on fire hazard seasons, please visit the Energy and Environment Cabinet’s webpage on Outdoor Burning Laws.

Anyone with questions should contact the Kentucky Division of Forestry at 606-783-8625.
