Former Lewis County Magistrate David Iery was recognized for his years of public service, perseverance, and advocacy on behalf of those affected by spinal cord injuries.
Lewis County Judge Executive George Sparks presented Iery with a Certificate of Appreciation during the regular meeting of Lewis County Fiscal Court.
The certificate recognized Iery’s “outstanding service, unwavering determination, and lifelong dedication to the citizens of Lewis County,” describing the lifelong Lewis County resident’s story as one of “extraordinary courage and purpose.”
Iery suffered a life-altering spinal cord injury in 1989, but went on to become an advocate for spinal cord injury awareness and research while also serving his community in elected office.
“Your perseverance has inspired countless individuals both within Lewis County and far beyond,” Sparks read from the certificate.
The recognition noted Iery’s service as a Lewis County magistrate and his efforts to represent the residents of his district with integrity and dedication while working to improve the lives of others.
Iery’s work has also extended well beyond county government through the David Iery Foundation and numerous community events promoting spinal cord injury awareness, research, and prevention.
The certificate notes that Iery turned personal tragedy into “a mission of hope,” including educating young athletes about safety and supporting efforts toward finding a cure for paralysis. His work has drawn statewide and national attention to spinal cord injuries and research.
“Your life stands as a powerful example of resilience, service, and compassion,” Sparks read. “The citizens of Lewis County are proud to honor your contributions and grateful for the difference you have made in so many lives.”
Iery thanked Sparks and Fiscal Court for the recognition, but quickly shifted the attention away from himself and toward the people who have helped make the David Iery Foundation’s work possible.
“The recognition is great, not personally but for the foundation, the members, the volunteers, and everything that we do,” Iery said, also recognizing the foundation’s sponsors.
Iery said he remains proud of his Lewis County roots and of having had the opportunity to serve on Fiscal Court.
“It’s great to be from Lewis County,” he said, adding that it was meaningful to see others continuing to serve and work to improve the community.
Iery said he was humbled that his work has taken him beyond Lewis County and gained recognition at both the state and national levels.
“It just means a lot that, for me, that I’m here from Lewis County and being recognized, and the foundation for what we’re doing,” Iery said.
Sparks concluded the presentation simply, telling Iery, “We appreciate you, David.”
