Authorities have identified the man whose body was recovered from the Ohio River in Vanceburg earlier this week as Jason D. Frisbie, 38, of Columbus, Ohio.
Lewis County Sheriff Johnny Bivens said local authorities worked with officials in Ohio as part of the identification process.
Lewis County E-911 received a call at approximately 4:37 p.m. Monday, May 4, reporting a body in the water near Scott Park on Front Street in Vanceburg. A mother who had taken her children to play at the park spotted the body and called 911.
Responding agencies included the Vanceburg Police Department, Lewis County Emergency Management, the Lewis County Coroner’s Office, and the Vanceburg Fire Department.
The body was recovered from the river under the direction of Lewis County Coroner Tony Gaydos and transported to the State Medical Examiner’s Office in Frankfort for examination and positive identification. Gaydos said a preliminary report from the medical examiner did not indicate a cause of death.
Lewis County Emergency Management Director Dennis Brown expressed sympathy to the family and appreciation to the agencies involved in the recovery and identification effort.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and loved ones of Mr. Frisbie during this very difficult time,” Brown said. “We appreciate the cooperation and professionalism shown by all responding agencies, including local responders, the Coroner’s Office, Sheriff Johnny Bivens, and the officials in Ohio who assisted with the identification process. I also want to recognize the Lewis County dispatchers who handled numerous calls, tips, and pieces of information from the public while efforts were underway to identify Mr. Frisbie. Their professionalism and patience were greatly appreciated throughout the process.”
Authorities said the incident remains under investigation and no additional information is being released at this time.
