A juvenile bald eagle was injured Monday morning after attempting to land on an electric line along West Second Street in Vanceburg.
The young female eagle, which has not yet developed the distinctive white head of an adult, apparently made contact with, or caused contact between, power lines, resulting in a short that briefly knocked out power in the area.
The eagle suffered injuries to a wing and a leg in the incident.
Utility crews responded to restore service, while animal control and Police Chief Joe Paul Gilbert safely recovered the eagle. It was transported to an animal rescue by a deputy and has been transferred to a wildlife rehabilitation facility.
The good news is, the eagle is expected to make a full recovery.
A reminder that even our national symbol is not immune to the hazards of modern infrastructure.
Thanks to those who responded quickly to help both restore power and ensure the eagle received care.
